I couldn't use Medium anymore, it felt so fake to me. As for Substack, I pretty much use it to support posts like yours with a heart or a comment from time to time, and use it for my gaming giveaways, but other than that, you are so correct, if you don't already have an audience from somewhere else, you most likely won't grow a following on Substack.
This is very true, especially since the content farms have started using artificial intelligence software to write so many articles, and then they dump them onto Medium and other writing platforms as well.

I think the market has gotten so saturated now that it is very hard to grow an audience anywhere. Writing for fun is pretty much the only option.
